Climate change has the potential to irreversibly change our futures. We have a short window of time to take the urgent action necessary to limit average global temperature rise to a safer 1.5 °C.
Dear World Leaders is an initiative by the UN Development Programme to mobilize citizens and push for action on the climate crisis.
Tackling the climate crisis requires that all countries make bold pledges under the Paris Agreement to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Through UNDP’s Climate Promise we support over 120 countries and territories to increase the ambition of their national climate pledges.
UNDP believes that to tackle climate change, we need an entirely new way of working. We need world leaders to make bold choices urgently. And the only way we’re going to do that is if we can get millions of people to talk about the options for a better future. That’s why our online game Mission 1.5 and the Peoples’ Climate Vote used gaming to become the world’s largest-ever survey on climate action.
Climate Vote used gaming to become the world’s largest-ever survey on climate action.
The #DearWorldLeaders initiative is a natural extension of this work. We want to ensure that decision makers all around the globe hear citizens’ voices clearly: the climate crisis is real, it is happening now, and we have to act fast and make bold choices urgently.
Dear World Leaders is not just a one-off initiative culminating in a single event. It is also a time capsule preserving the anxiety, frustrations and hope of people from all over the planet.
With the help of people from all over the world, we remind world leaders of what’s at stake.
If enough of us speak up, the right kind of change will follow.
